Galaxy S10 5G reportedly catches fire
« on: May 01, 2019, 06:30:11 AM »

While Korean media vents that Chinese phone makers are all coming out with 5G models, and some like Xiaomi are even able to make them for half the price of their local equivalents from Samsung or LG, the more worrying story today is that a Galaxy S10 5G has reportedly caught fire all on its own.

Samsung's first 5G handset went on sale in Korea a few weeks ago, and is about to land on Verizon on May 16. A buyer in Korea is reporting that it's been just six days of use, and the S10 5G started emitting smoke while being at the desk. The user grabbed it and threw it on the ground, and that, according to them, has been the only rougher impact the phone has suffered in the period.

They contacted Samsung and took the Galaxy S10 5G to an authorized repair center. After a waiting period of two weeks, Samsung got back to the owner, and said that it can't compensate the buyer as "there is evidence of external damage."

As a reminder, the Galaxy S10 5G sports the largest battery pack ever on a flagship model from Samsung - 4500 mAh - and we are eagerly awaiting to put it through its paces in battery life as well as camera tests, given that it has no less than six cameras in total all around.

We'll see how this story develops, and Samsung has bitter experience with thermal runaway of the Note 7's batteries, yet there should be more than one claim and counterclaim in situations like this before we reach any conclusions.
