After topping Apple for two consecutive quarters in global smartphone shipments, it’s no big secret that Huawei is also aiming to overtake Samsung and become the world’s number one manufacturer of mobile devices... eventually.

Of course, sales volume is not everything, with bigger profit margins and various innovative technologies being actively pursued for commercial integration over the next couple of years. In a recent exclusive interview with German tech blog AndroidPIT (translated), Walter Ji, the President of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group for the Western European Region, teased and detailed (a little) some of his company’s ambitious plans to stay ahead of the competition in the near future.

While the P20 Pro was a triple-lens pioneer in early 2018, Samsung’s latest Galaxy A9 edition managed to beat everyone else to the quad-camera punch. This means Huawei is now all of a sudden playing catch-up, fully intending to release a phone with four shooters on its back at some point in 2019.

Because it’s not about the number of cameras, the Chinese tech giant envisions a not-very-distant future in which one imaging sensor would be used for 10x optical zoom. Not 3x, like the telephoto lens on the P20 Pro and Mate 20 Pro, or the 2x-capable 10MP telephoto shooter of the mid-range Galaxy A9 (2018).

“Ten times the zoom in consistent quality” is what could make next-gen Huawei flagships shine, although technically, Walter Ji didn’t confirm the technology would be ready for primetime as early as next year. The company is still doing research, preparing a few big surprises for an unspecified release timeline.

A 5G-capable folding smartphone with a flexible display is also part of Huawei’s world domination plans, with a hefty battery, improved system speed, and reduced latency highlighted as possible key selling points.

At the other end of the spectrum, Android One software would apparently make the company’s customers unhappy, so Huawei is likely to stick with its proprietary EMUI skin for both high and mid-end devices.
